Starting today, more changes are coming to the already confusing interchange of Interstate 277 and Caldwell Street/South Boulevard in uptown Charlotte.The remaking of the interchange is part of a plan to improve the area around the NASCAR Hall of Fame, scheduled to open in 2010. When finished, the new interchange will have a considerably smaller footprint, opening more land for development.There are a number of new closures and detours starting at 7 p.m. today. Many of the detours will end by 6 a.m. Monday.The Charlotte Department of Transportation wants commuters to expect significant delays on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, and College, Tryon and Third streets, especially during rush hour Friday.Some of the changes include:TonightThe Brevard Street connector to I-277 will close permanently. The intersection of Stonewall Street and Brevard Street will close.Brevard Street between Martin Luther King Jr. and Stonewall will be open to local traffic only.Southbound Caldwell Street will close at Fourth Street.Monday morningThe new I-277 on-ramp from Caldwell Street will open.The intersection of Stonewall Street and Brevard Street re-opens.Caldwell Street from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to Stonewall Street becomes a two-way street.Brevard Street will be reduced to two outbound lanes.Tuesday morningThe recently constructed northbound I-277 on-ramp and off-ramp at South Boulevard will reopen.The existing northbound I-277 off-ramp to South Boulevard will close permanently.
