I-85 southbound closed in Cabarrus
A wreck has closed the southbound lanes of Interstate 85 in Cabarrus County.

At 10:25 a.m., the N.C. Department of Transportation said traffic is able to get past the wreck scene in the left shoulder, but traffic is backed up badly.

The wreck happened about 9:30 a.m. near mile marker 55. At that point of I-85, the road has two traffic lanes. Both lanes remain blocked, and DOT officials say it could be 11:30 a.m. or noon before the lanes are reopened. Injuries were involved in the wreck.

Motorists planning to drive south on I-85 in the next hour should consider using U.S. 29 as an alternate. They can get back on the interstate at the Poplar Tent Road or Bruton Smith Boulevard interchanges.
